Goal: Students classify movements and defend the “why.”
Steps
Teacher win: Students learn that good science includes uncertainty.
Where it comes from
Some owls migrate like clockwork. Most don’t. And a few do the owl version of “I’ll go wherever the food is” and make it everyone’s problem.
If you’ve ever wondered why you see one owl every winter and another owl seems to vanish after fall, you’re asking a real ecology question:
Are owls migrating, or are they just moving around?

Activities like this one
Would This Owl Stay? Resource Map
Give students a simple map of a farm, park, forest edge, or schoolyard. Add summer resource cards and let them decide whether an owl would likely stay, shift, or leave.
Owl School Report Cards
This activity turns back-to-school energy into animal development science.
Owl Eye Color Time Lab
Turn the classroom into a mini wildlife investigation lab. Instead of simply sorting owl photos by eye color, students become field biologists trying to predict when each owl hunts.
