Wild Slice

Pick a predator and swipe its dinner out of the air.

Every animal that comes up past you lives where your hunter lives: the coyote's prairie sends up prairie dogs and quail, the lynx's forest sends up roe deer and chamois. Swipe what your hunter eats. Let the ones that hunt it go by, or the round ends there and you find out why.

Five hunters, five menus

and what hunts them

Nothing in this game is invented. An animal flies past a hunter because it lives where that hunter lives and really is eaten by it, and the ones that end a round really do kill it. Here is the whole of it, which a minute of play is too short to show.

Coyote

North American prairie

A coyote will eat almost anything: mice, rabbits, lizards, grasshoppers, fish. Being fussy about dinner is how an animal runs out of places to live, and the coyote is not fussy. That is why there are coyotes in deserts, in forests, and in the middle of cities.

Gray wolf

North American northern forest

Wolves hunt animals many times their own weight by working as a pack, and they finish what they find: a carcass somebody else left is a meal, not a waste. One wolf cannot bring down a moose. Eight can.

Eurasian lynx

European forest

A Eurasian lynx is a deer hunter the size of a big dog. It stalks in close and then takes one or two bounds. The hunt is over in seconds, or it is over because the deer heard it, and most of them are over because the deer heard it.

Red fox

European woodland and meadow

A red fox eats mice, beetles, eggs, frogs and fruit, and buries what it cannot finish to dig up later. Being able to eat anything is why the red fox lives in more places than almost any other wild carnivore: farmland, forest, desert, and the middle of a city.

Cougar

Rocky Mountain forest

A cougar hunts alone and can bring down an elk five times its own weight, then drags the kill somewhere hidden, covers it with branches, and comes back to it for days. Almost nothing up here hunts a grown cougar. The danger is losing the kill, and with it the week's food.
